Fad diets

Do Fad Diets work?
extreme dieting has become a immensly popular fashion trend. however do these fad diets work? According to people who have tested these methods the effects of losing weight do not last. " the only problem with fad diets, though, is that I can never keep them up. Once i stop, the weight always comes back,in fact even faster!"says Nicole(a girl who likes to test diets) Examples: Atkins,Prikin, sugar busters.
the one thing in common is that these diets do not work in the long run, it comes and goes. the extreme dieting may make you lose weight but it inevitably comes back.these diets make bodies weak and are very unhealthy. Esperts agree that girls are depriving themselves of the proper nutrition necessary for physical and mental development. I mean we are all still growing, people if you want to be tall you have to eat enough!
early adolescence(youth age) is one of the best times to build body mass, lack of calcium(diets that cut dairy) can lead to oesteoporosis- a condition in which bones become fragile-later in life.

Fad diets aren't sustainable-can you imagine just eating grapefruit for the rest of your life?Just like what Mr johari(our bio teacher who is grading this) said, every living thing needs the proper amount of nutrition and a balanced diet to, well, survive.
for example, Atkins urges followers to cut carbohydrates. High fat and high protein foods are encouraged instead.the follower's body might undergo ketosis( when the body burns fat for fuel, causing it to produce toxic acids called ketones). while the weight lost can be exiting, the other side effects of ketosis- headaches, constipation, dizziness and badbreath-usually aren't as welcomed.
Starvation or crazy supplements aren't a smart way to lose weight. people should regularly exercise, withdraw from trans fat foods and eat wisely.

MADRID, Spain (Reuters) -- The world's first ban on overly thin models at a top-level fashion show in Madrid has caused outrage among modeling agencies and raised the prospect of restrictions at other venues.

Madrid's fashion week has turned away underweight models after protests that girls and young women were trying to copy their rail-thin looks and developing eating disorders.

Organizers say they want to project an image of beauty and health, rather than a waif-like, or heroin chic look.

But Cathy Gould, of New York's Elite modeling agency, said the fashion industry was being used as a scapegoat for illnesses like anorexia and bulimia.

'I think its outrageous, I understand they want to set this tone of healthy beautiful women, but what about discrimination against the model and what about the freedom of the designer,' said Gould, Elite's North America director, adding that the move could harm careers of naturally 'gazelle-like' models.

Madrid's regional government, which sponsors the show and imposed restrictions, said it did not blame designers and models for anorexia. It said the fashion industry had a responsibility to portra"

Skinny models

as stated above, much of the influence from media and beauty steortypes have caused many young people to see that they are fat and ugly. i think young people nowadays have been so mind-washed to believe that being beautiful is: skinny. They have gone to the extreme stage of starving and forcing themselves to suffer just for the sake of vanity.Teens seem to be suffering from a crisis of confidence lately about their outer appearance. What happened to "true beauty comes from the inside not the outside"?our teachers have always said what counts is on the inside, thats more important and thats a reminder to all the people who read this blog. think about it.

THE DEMON,THE EVIL.ANEROXIA.

ANEROXIA NERVOSA.WHAT ISIT?
A person with anorexia nervosa, (anorexia), has an intense fear of gaining weight. Someone with anorexia thinks about food a lot and limits the food she or he eats, even though she or he is too thin. Anorexia is more than just a problem with food. It's a way of using food or starving oneself to feel more in control of life and to ease tension, anger, and anxiety. Most people with anorexia are female. An anorexic:
-has a low body weight for her or his height
-resists keeping a normal body weight
-has an intense fear of gaining weight
-thinks she or he is fat even when very thin
-misses three (menstrual) periods in a row―for girls/women who have started having their periods.

THE EFFECTS:
Anorexia is a life threatening condition that can put a serious strain on many of the body's organs and physiological resources. A recent review of the scientific literature outlined a number of reliable findings in this area. Anorexia puts a particular strain on the structure and function of the heart and cardiovascular system, with slow heart rate (bradycardia) and elongation of the QT interval seen early on. People with anorexia typically have a disturbed electrolyte balance, particularly low levels of phosphate, which has been linked to heart failure, muscle weakness, immune dysfunction, and ultimately death. Those who develop anorexia before adulthood may suffer stunted growth and subsequent low levels of essential hormones (including sex hormones) and chronically increased cortisol levels. Osteoporosis can also develop as a result of anorexia in 38-50% of cases, as poor nutrition leads to the retarded growth of essential bone structure and low bone mineral density.

THOSE BEHAVIOUR PROBLEMS ANEROXIC PEOPLE HAVE:
They often get cranky and jumpy for no apparent reason, and are usually dejected or grouchy most of the time due to lack of food. Above all else,no one can hide the tell-tale signs of those already skinny jeans falling off those tiny waists; the emaciated pallor of the face, framed by hungry, longing eyes; and the bones and the pallor and insipidness that surrounds these people. Death by dieting. Sound appropriate, anyone?

AND JUST TO EMPHASIZE MY POINT...

MORTALITY RATES
-Eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any mental illness
-A study by the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders reported that 5 – 10% of anorexics die within 10 years after contracting the disease; 18-20% of anorexics will be dead after 20 years and only 30 – 40% ever fully recover
-The mortality rate associated with anorexia nervosa is 12 times higher than the death rate of ---ALL causes of death for females 15 – 24 years old.
-20% of people suffering from anorexia will prematurely die from complications related to their eating disorder, including suicide and heart problems

ADOLESCENTS
-Anorexia is the 3rd most common chronic illness among adolescents
-95% of those who have eating disorders are between the ages of 12 and 25
-50% of girls between the ages of 11 and 13 see themselves as overweight
-80% of 13-year-olds have attempted to lose weight RACIAL AND ETHNIC MINORITIES

thank you, South Carolina Department of Mental Health

-5% of women and girls in USA itself
-70% of sixth grader interviewed said they started being conscious of their weight when they were 11-12 years old
-half the girls and a third of the boys interviewed of age 8-10 yrs old said they were unhappy with their bodies
-in a group of 9-15 year old girls, a little more than half exercises to lose weight, slightly less eats less to lose weight and 1/20 took dieting pills or laxatives to help lose that extra pound.
-1% of female adolescents are suffering from anorexia. That means 1 out of 100 women between the ages of 10-20 years have eating disorders and should be seeing the doctor.
-Bulimia affects 1 to 3 percent of middle and high school girls.

and dont think eating disorders affect girls alone.

-5%-10% of people with anorexia or bulimia are males.

Dieting has become dangerous in a world where we live in.

In the constant changing world, we are pressured with the task of achieving perfection. In this case, perfect bodies. Is this really possible?

Even in the media, pictures are published, reflecting on standards of society that have reached far beyond the attainable. This is very worrying. It mirrors the demoralization of our society. it portrays the wrong image to youngsters of today.

For example, the trends that we follow. Such as the latest leggings. One person wears it and it spreads like fire through even the greatest fashion labels who suposedly make the heads of fashion.

Statistics prove them.
